A Jewish Indiana Jones: The Rabbi of Timbuktu

Dr. William F.S. Miles, Professor of Political Science, will relate his own experience in tracking
down the story of Rabbi Mardochee Aby Serour, a North African caravan leader, explorer and
merchant. After the destruction of the largest Jewish community of the Sahara, he was the first
Jew to return to establish residence in the fabled city of Timbuktu.

Dr. Lori Lefkovitz, Ruderman Professor of Jewish Studies and Director of the Jewish Studies
program is the author of In Scripture: The First Stories of Jewish Sexual Identities. She is widely
published in the fields of literature, critical theory and Jewish feminist studies.
