Cantor Scott Sokol

Hazzan Scott M. Sokol joined the professional staff of Beth Sholom as its cantor in September 2005. In addition to this position, Hazzan Sokol is Dean of the Jewish Music Institute and Director of both the Cantor-Educator Program and the Special Education Program at Hebrew College. He has a BA in Psychology from Brandeis University, MA and PhD degrees in Cognitive Neuropsychology from Johns Hopkins University and a MSM and Cantorial Investiture from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

Prior to coming to Beth Sholom, he served for eleven years as Hazzan and Spiritual Leader of Congregation Kehillath Israel in Brookline. Both prior to and during that tenure, Hazzan Sokol spent a dozen years on the clinical and academic faculties of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Society and recipient of a Young Psychologist Award from the American Psychological Association. He is also a former Fulbright Scholar and Wexner Fellow.

Hazzan Sokol is an accomplished violist and singer. He is a featured soloist on several recordings with the Zamir Chorale of Boston, for whom he served as assistant conductor and vocal coach for several years. He is also the co-founder of Koleinu: The Jewish Community Chorus of Boston. He performs currently with Sheminiyah, a group of eight local cantors that he helped bring together as an ensemble. Hazzan Sokol has served on the executive council of the Cantors Assembly of America, and is the former editor of The Journal of Synagogue Music. Hazzan Sokol lives in Framingham with his wife, Dr. Francene Reichel (Sokol) and their two sons, Benjamin (9 years old) and Samuel (6 years old).

Cantor's Message
March 2009

Love is in the air...

As I write this brief note for Ruchenu, it is fast approaching Valentine's Day. Yes, I know that is St. Valentine's Day, and very much NOT a Jewish holiday, but I'd still not risk forgetting it. And anyway, as it says in Corinthians (as long as Im waxing Christian), "Love is never envious or arrogant with pride." We Jews also have our times for reflecting on love, and that season is fast approaching. Purim is a holiday that celebrates the attraction and love of Ahasueros for beautiful Queen Esther (an attraction that literally saved the Jewish people). And then comes Passover, when we celebrate the love of God for the Jewish people. It is for this reason that we read ShirhaShirim, the love poetry of Song of Songs, on Shabbat of Passover.

What better time then for a concert of Jewish love songs, then smack in between Purim and Passover? As you should all know by now, on Sunday March 29th we will be producing a concert called Ahavat Olam -- Love Eternal, which will feature Jewish love songs from Baroque to Broadway (literally). The artists will be yours truly with my lovely wife Francene, Cantor Randy Schloss and his wife Leah, and Cantor Faith Steinsnyder together with her husband Cantor David Perper. I know you already "love" me and Francene, but trust me these other couples are AWESOME. You will not want to miss this concert. So come on down and bring someone you love (or maybe someone you're hoping to love in the future.)

Love,
Cantor Scott Sokol
